Badly worn gems like this Amethest are best recut completely.
This stone finished almost exactly the same diameter and still
fit the ring it came out of

Often  a stone can be improved with only partial recutting.
This emerald had been cut overseas  with a big belly on the back
To save extra weight. This left a big window in the center where
the facets are well below critical angle. Recutting the back only  
to proper angles improved the apperance greatly with no loss in
 diameter but a weight loss from .92 ct to .80 ct.
